Background

2004 was the Year of the Built Environment (YBE2004).

The Houses of the Future will challenge Australians to consider the future of our built environment and the most tangible element of that environment – the house.

Each of the six houses is designed by a different architect, using a different base material. The six houses form part of a new generation of prefabricated dwellings emerging around the globe. The houses are a response to growing consumer demand for homes that are modern, environmentally sensitive and of high quality.

The objective is to promote new ways of providing affordable, environmentally sustainable, prefabricated housing in Australia that are also futuristic and innovative in their design.

The idea of an exhibition or prototype house is to break the boundaries of convention and to offer a vision of what the House of the Future might be like.
